Eugeen Van Mieghem and the Emigrants of the Red Star Line The exhibition evokes the atmosphere of Antwerp between 1870 and 1935, a period of great economic expansion during which the city became one of the most important European emigrant ports. The focus in this history of Antwerp and of its port is on the Red Star Line, the shipping company which shipped millions of emigrants to the East River piers in the South Street Seaport and which also became renowned for its luxurious cruises later on. The work of painter Eugeen Van Mieghem is interwoven with and presented in the exhibition. He lived and worked during the same period and his artistic oeuvre - paintings and drawings - is incomparable when it comes to showing daily life in the port and the history of emigrants. "Van Mieghem werd geboren in het hartje van de oude haven op 1 oktober 1875 (vader hield café, eerst op de Van Meterenkaai, daarna in de Montevideostraat op het Eilandje).
In zijn jeugdjaren werd hij geconfronteerd met het harde leven aan de waterkant. Op de lagere school toonde hij reeds zijn tekentalent. Rond 1892 kwam hij aan de Antwerpse Academie in contact met het werk van o.a. Van Gogh, Seurat, Meunier en de Toulouse-Lautrec.
Door de jongerenvereniging "De Kapel" (Godshuis Lantschot nabij het Hessenhuis) maakte hij kennis met de ideeën van het anarchisme. Er groeide in hem een idealisme dat hij nooit zou verloochenen. Hij zou de kunstenaar worden van het typische havenvolk: de buildragers, de zakkenmaaksters, emigranten, schippers en zwervers."
